TAMIL NADU

The city of Mamallapuram was founded by the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century AD. The mandapa or pavilions and the rathas or shrines shaped as temple chariots are hewn from the granite rock face, while the famed Shore Temple, erected half a century later, is built from dressed stone.

Pondicherry, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal and Chandernagar remained a part of French India until 1954. The independence of India in 1947 gave impetus to the union of France's Indian possessions with former British India. ... The de jure union of French India with the Indian Union did not take place until 1962.

The first official use of the name Chennai is said to be in a sale deed, dated 8 August 1639, to Francis Day of the East India Company. Another suggestion is that the city was named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple; the word chenni in Tamil means face, with the temple regarded as the face of the city.
